It created a lengthy discussion, but in the end county commissioners last week gave their nod of approval and granted a major special use permit for a proposed entertainment park that would span more than 1,000 acres northwest of Lake Panasoffkee.
After three hours of testimony, discussion and questions last Tuesday, the board voted 4 to 1 to approve the permit request to Otsego Holdings LLC. Commissioner Don Burgess cast the lone opposing vote.
Commissioners listened while promoters of the facility provided the board with expert witnesses saying that the proposed facility would not create noise levels beyond legal limits or generate traffic snarls – two of the main objections to the facility presented by opponents of the project.
The permit gives developers the green light to proceed with plans to develop the park on the northwest corner of County Road 475 and State Road 44.
County Commissioner Garry Breeden made the motion to approve the permit saying that based on expert testimony he believes the project with not generate excessive noise or traffic and would additionally be governed by Southwest Florida Water Management District and state Department of Environmental Protection regulations.
Breeden also said because the county has substantial control of special use permits, it would be “easy to pull the plug” if the park turned out not to be in compliance with county requirements.
Commission Chairman Doug Gilpin provided the second to Breeden’s motion saying he believes the noise and the traffic can be controlled and that the venture would be advantageous to the area.
A substantial amount of time was spent as residents with property near the proposed facility voiced either their support or opposition to the plans.
Most of the opposition centered on concerns that the facility would disturb the rural nature of the area and that the park did not conform to current property uses.
But supporters said the park would offer anything from new jobs to economic growth to a much needed entertainment facility.
The permit allows developers to construct an outdoor sports and musical entertainment park including an outdoor auditorium for concerts, riding trails and mud holes for ATV and 4x4 vehicles, rock climbing areas, picnic and camping areas, an adventure run mud and water course, a tractor and truck pull area, an airboat track, a playground and volleyball and sand area.
Additional facilities would include a helipad area, vendor area, first aid stations and support buildings and facilities.
The park would operate 12 events a year, one a month. Events would be operated from Thursdays (for staff to set up the event) through Mondays.
Found this in the Sumter County Times, but no dates or  address

Buddy brought a newspaper clipping into work today. It described the propsed park just the way you described it but said 400 acre park on 1100 acres.... said the local schools were gonna have a competition on the name of the park and the park motto....winner gets a free annual pass and the school gets some cash prizes...they are hoping the "amphitheater" that is proposed will draw big name concerts to the area. They had a diagram layout of the proposed park in the article. It definitely looks worthy of a road trip to check it out when its done.....
