Hi all! (first newbie post).
Well, I'm thinking about building a mega truck on 5 ton military Rockwells.
I have a lead on an M923 5 ton 6X6 as a possible project and lately I've been actually considering cutting it up someday for the axles to build a mega truck (always wanted one).
Many elsewhere have suggested I just get a takeout set for like 1500 bucks. I may still but I'd like to drive them first before I pull them. Also would have a spare rear axle that way. Plus, I'm also a military vehicle enthusiast, who knows and loves these trucks, and would want to drive the good running truck for awhile first and enjoy it.
Being totally new to this besides "I want one", looking for tech advice. Any caveats with the 5 ton axles? I'm just thinking of using them since if I have the truck (I don't yet, broke college student) I'll already have my axles. I know they have to be "debraked", anything else I'll have to do?
I'm looking for advice from the very beginning of the teardown through dismantling and parting out or scrapping the 923 (if I don't just keep it), pulling the axles, how would you tear apart a running 22,000 lb truck? Also, of course I'll be researching, but need ideas re: getting the axles ready for mega truck duty.
I still don't have solid ideas for the actual build yet, so I'm just looking into the very beginnings of getting my axles, for one thing. I wouldn't pull them until I had most everything ready most likely, so I could enjoy and drive the truck!
